Osteopathic Treatment Sutton Coldfield

“…Osteopaths use a number of non-invasive treatments such as touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to restore bodily equilibrium through increasing the mobility of joints, relieving muscle tension, enhancing blood and nerve supply to tissues, and encouraging an individual’s own healing mechanisms.” NHS.

Your osteopathic treatment often consists of a combination of techniques, dependent upon your individual needs.

The techniques used will also depend upon your preferences, and we will never include techniques that you may be uncomfortable with.

Osteopath Soft Tissue Manipulation Dudley

Osteopathic Soft Tissue Massage Sutton Coldfield

Soft tissue massage plays a crucial role in osteopathic treatment.

It helps to release tension within the muscles, tendons, and connective tissues, promoting relaxation and improved mobility.

Additionally, it prepares the surrounding area for joint adjustments, allowing for more effective treatment and enhanced overall function.

Osteopath Manipulation Dudley

Osteopathic Manipulation Sutton Coldfield

Our Birmingham osteopaths use precise manipulation techniques to adjust specific joints, restoring their natural mobility. This process creates a slight gap within the joint, often producing a clicking sound. Manipulation is rarely painful and helps to improve movement and function.

We perform manipulation separately from soft tissue massage, as we find that relaxed surrounding muscles make the adjustment more effective and comfortable for the patient.

"THE FRIENDLY AND RELAXED ATMOSPHERE WILL MAKE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AS WELL AS CARED FOR FROM YOUR VERY FIRST VISIT. "

Osteopath Sutton Coldfield – FAQs

Who and what do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopathy is suitable for anyone; we frequently treat newborn babies and patients in their nineties. Our treatment is tailored to meet each patient’s individual needs. As such, osteopathy can make a valuable contribution to the treatment and management of a wide range of complaints.

Whilst osteopathy is best known for treating back pain, it is not the only thing that osteopaths do. Osteopaths primarily treat the neuro-musculoskeletal system, affecting the muscles and joints, by using an osteopathic approach that is holistic and patient-centred.

LOW BACK PAIN

Osteopaths are best known for their effective treatment of back and neck pain. It is, therefore, the most common complaint that our new patients present with. Osteopathy can offer a fast and effective approach to managing back pain whether it is a recent, acute episode or a longer-standing, chronic condition.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published treatment guidelines for non-specific low back pain. Their recommendations can be found in Low Back Pain: Early Management of Persistent Non-Specific low back pain, Including Osteopathy.

The advice includes spinal manipulation, mobilisation, and massage for patients who “have been in pain for longer than six weeks but less than one year, where pain may be linked to structures in the back such as joints, muscles, and ligaments.”.

SPORTS-RELATED INJURIES

Osteopathy is being increasingly used in the treatment of sports injuries and by sportspeople to enable them to compete at their best, regardless of the level of sport that they are involved with. All The Guildhall Practice is known for our passion for sport and the treatment of sports-related injuries.

How osteopaths view the body, as an integrated whole, complements perfectly with the contemporary model of preparation and training in competitive sport.

For a long time, our principal osteopath, Andrew Leask worked at Birchfield Harriers on club nights treating a wide variety of athletes and injuries. Andrew also now works at Perform at St George’s Park, the new national centre for football treating footballers and other athletes. All of our Osteopaths are passionate about sport

PERFORMANCE RELATED INJURIES

The Guildhall Practice has close connections with several dance companies in Birmingham, including Birmingham Royal Ballet, The DanceXchange and the Rosie Kay Dance Company.

Andrew Leask works at Birmingham Conservatoire as a performance medicine consultant. Andrew is collaborating with Louise Landsdown, the head of strings, and Tobias Gross at ETH Zurich in a research project investigating the mechanical strain within the cervical spine whilst playing the viola and violin.

What Is Osteopathic Treatment Like?

There are a large number of different techniques that osteopaths use in order to treat patients. The osteopathic study requires us all to learn the same theoretical as well as practical skills. However, in practice, we choose the techniques which we feel will best suit our patient’s needs. Therefore, each osteopath works in a slightly different way.

  • Firstly, osteopathic treatment is very rarely painful. In fact, patients generally enjoy their treatments.
  • Treatment often includes soft tissue massage, articulation or stretching of the joints, and also manipulation when appropriate.
  • Your osteopath will also frequently prescribe an exercise regime.
  • We design this to support you in your rehabilitation and also to help prevent the symptoms from returning.
  • Finally, one of the benefits of group-practice is that we have different skills.
  • We will refer you to another member of the team if they are a better match for your individual needs.

What Should I Wear to my Osteopath Appointment?

Your Osteopath will, certainly, do their best to respect your modesty at all times. However, it is important that you tell them whenever you feel uncomfortable.

During the examination and treatment, your osteopath will, normally, ask you to remove some of your clothing. Most patients undress to their underwear, however, in order to feel comfortable, you may bring a pair of shorts and a t-shirt to change into.

Do You treat Sports Injuries ?

We have a long history of treating sportspeople at the Guildhall Practice with injuries as well as for maintenance. Sportspeople find that the philosophy of osteopathy fits in well with their approach to training and also with their preparation for competition.

Osteopaths see the body as an integrated whole; hence, each part affects other areas. Firstly, we have found that athletes respond very well to treatment when they become injured. However, we find that regular maintenance-based treatment reduces the risk of injury.

The practice has worked particularly closely with Birchfield Harriers for almost 30 Years. Andrew Leask, the director of the practice, also worked for Perform at St George’s Park, the new national centre for football. Where he treated footballers as well as other athletes.
