A pelvic ultrasound scan is a diagnostic tool used to assess the organs and structures within the pelvis. This includes the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and surrounding tissues. Pelvic scans are noninvasive, safe, and provide vital information to help diagnose a variety of conditions affecting the reproductive organs and urinary system.

The Guildhall Practice is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Our qualified and experienced sonographers are all registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS).

Pelvic Scans Birmingham FAQS

What are Ultrasound scans?

Ultrasounds are a safe and non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. They’re commonly used to examine organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys, as well as to monitor pregnancies, providing detailed views to help diagnose and guide treatment. You can book ultrasound scans in Birmingham via our online booking system.

Why book an Ultrasound Scan?

You might book an ultrasound to diagnose or monitor a range of conditions. This could include checking the health of your organs. Evaluating symptoms like pain or swelling, monitoring a pregnancy, or guiding certain treatments and procedures. Ultrasound Scans Birmingham provides a detailed, real-time view of inside your body without any radiation exposure.

Why might you need a Pelvic ultrasound scan?

There are several reasons why a clinician might refer you for a pelvic scan, such as:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort: To investigate the cause of unexplained pain in the lower abdomen.
  • Irregular periods: To assess the uterine lining or detect potential causes of irregular or heavy periods.
  • Fertility issues: To evaluate the health and structure of the ovaries and uterus, which are crucial for conception.
  • Pregnancy monitoring: To confirm an early pregnancy, check for the position of the foetus, or assess potential complications.
  • Bladder problems: To examine the bladder and detect any abnormalities, such as growths or a thickened bladder wall.
  • Ovarian cysts or fibroids: To confirm the presence of cysts or fibroids and assess their size and location.
  • Postmenopausal bleeding: To investigate the cause of bleeding after menopause
What are the different types of Pelvic ultrasound scan?

There are two main types of pelvic scans: transabdominal and transvaginal.

Transabdominal Pelvic Ultrasound

In a transabdominal scan, the gel is applied to the abdomen, and the ultrasound probe is moved across the lower abdomen to capture images. This scan offers a broader view of the pelvic organs and is often used for general pelvic assessments. You will usually be asked to drink water before the scan to fill the bladder, as this helps improve the visibility of internal structures.

Transvaginal Pelvic Ultrasound

A transvaginal scan involves inserting a small ultrasound probe into the vagina. This type of scan offers a closer and more detailed view of the pelvic organs, particularly the uterus and ovaries. It is often performed when more detailed images are required or when a transabdominal scan does not provide sufficient information. This procedure is safe and usually well tolerated by most patients.

How to prepare for a Pelvic ultrasound scan?

Preparation for a pelvic ultrasound is simple:

For a transabdominal scan, you will need to have a full bladder. This improves the visibility of the pelvic organs. You may be asked to drink approximately one litre of water an hour before your scan.

For a transvaginal scan, there is usually no specific preparation. It is advisable to empty your bladder before the scan for comfort.

Wear comfortable clothing that provides easy access to your lower abdomen. The entire procedure usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the type of scan and the information needed.

What happens during and after a Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

During a pelvic scan, you will either lie on your back or in a semi-upright position. For a transabdominal scan, the sonographer will apply gel to your lower abdomen and move the ultrasound probe over the area to capture images. For a transvaginal scan, the sonographer will gently insert the probe into the vagina.

Ultrasound waves pass through the body and create images of your internal organs on a screen. The sonographer may ask you to adjust your position slightly during the scan to get clearer images. The process is painless, though you may feel slight discomfort if your bladder is very full during a transabdominal scan or probe insertion in a transvaginal scan.

After the Scan

After the scan, the sonographer will wipe off any remaining gel, and you will be able to leave immediately. There is no recovery time needed. The sonographer will analyse the images and provide a detailed report for your referring clinician. Your clinician will then discuss the results with you and explain any next steps, whether further testing or treatment is required.

What can a Pelvic Ultrasound Scan detect?

A pelvic scan can identify a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Ovarian cysts: Fluidfilled sacs on the ovaries that are often benign but can sometimes cause pain or other symptoms.
  • Uterine fibroids: Noncancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy periods, pain, and other symptoms.
  • Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and potential fertility issues.
  • Ectopic pregnancy: A pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus, often in the fallopian tube, which requires urgent medical attention.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): Infections that affect the reproductive organs and can lead to pain and infertility issues if left untreated.
  • Bladder abnormalities: Including thickened bladder walls or growths, may need further investigation.
