ABOUT THE COVID PCR TEST FOR TRAVEL
If you are planning a trip abroad, you will likely require a PCR test for travel as proof that you are fit to fly.
The PCR swab test takes samples from the back of your throat and nose to detect any Covid-19 virus.
The laboratory test then identifies the presence of the RNA genetic material of Covid-19. It is highly sensitive and will identify if you have an active infection even if you are not experiencing any symptoms.
Importantly, we use a UKAS approved and accredited laboratories. We determine from your booking questionnaire where you are travelling to, and we will use an appropriate laboratory for you. Our certificates are recognised worldwide.
What is UKAS?
What does the laboratory process for covid-19 rt-pcr testing involve?
The RT-PCR test is a highly sensitive technique that can be used to detect the messenger RNA (mRNA), genetic material, that is unique to the covid-19 virus.
It takes about 4 hours for the laboratory to process each sample. It is an incredibly sensitive test which is why it is regarded as being the 'Gold-Standard' in Covid-19 testing.
The sample load from your throat and nose contains only a very tiny amount of viral genetic material. Unfortunately, not enough to reliably test for.
The RT-PCR process amplifies the amount genetic material to a much larger volume; which can then be detected.
the two-stage lab process.
- Reverse transcription, the 'RT' part. This is where the RNA we have retrieved from the throat and nose is synthesised to form complementary DNA, (cDNA).
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This is where the specific cDNA goes through a series of amplifications, eventually creating a quantity of viral load that can be reliably detected.
RT-PCR is a technique that had previously been successfully used to measure the viral load with HIV patients and other RNA viruses such as mumps and measles.
We hand deliver all of our samples to the laboratory in order to ensure that your results are returned to you on time.
are your covid-19 pcr tests approved?
Yes. The PCR tests that we use have been accredited with UKAS, the regulatory body for laboratories in the UK.
They are the gold-standard in Covid testing.
Your certificate will be recognised worldwide.
There are particular regulations for some countries. We always request the details of where you are flying to, and we will inform you whenever we are aware of particular requirements for us to use certain labs.
what happens if i test positive for covid-19
We will inform you in the unfortunate event that you test positive for COVID-19. The laboratory will also inform Public Health England's track and trace.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to travel, and you will have to self isolate yourself.
