ABOUT THE PCR COVID-19 TEST FOR TRAVEL
Are you planning to travel abroad?
Currently, most countries require you to have a Covid-19 PCR test and a Fit-To-Fly certificate.
For the Test To Release scheme you must have the PCR Covid-19 test. Therefore, you should book this test if you are planning release early from quarantine when returning to the U.K.
The Guildhall Practice uses UKAS approved and accredited laboratories. Hence, you can rest assured that our certificates are recognised worldwide.
The PCR Covid-19 test is the gold standard in Covid-19 testing. The PCR swab test takes samples from the back of your throat and nose to detect any Covid-19 virus.
Importantly, the test identifies the presence of the RNA genetic material of Covid-19. It is, therefore, highly sensitive; and will identify if you have an active infection even if you are not experiencing any symptoms.
What is UKAS?
Firstly, UKAS stands for The United Kingdom Accreditation Service and they act on behalf of the U.K Government.
First and Foremost, they are an organisation responsible for maintaining high clinical standards in laboratories.
Importantly, UKAS have also accredited the laboratory we use
It means that your Covid-19 PCR test and certificate will be recognised world-wide.
What does the laboratory process for covid-19 rt-pcr testing involve?
The PCR test is the 'Gold-Standard' in Covid-19 testing.
The RT-PCR test is a highly sensitive laboratory technique. It can be used to detect the messenger RNA (mRNA), genetic material, that is unique to the covid-19 virus.
It takes at least 4 hours for the laboratory to process each sample.
However, the process can take much longer. As the test may have to be repeated a number of times in order to obtain a result.
The sample load from your throat and nose contains only a very tiny amount of viral genetic material. Therefore, there is not enough to reliably test without further processing.
The RT-PCR process amplifies the amount genetic material to a much larger volume.
Therefore, testing can then detect any Covid-19 genetic material.
It is a two-stage process that requires a laboratory:
- Reverse transcription, the 'RT' part. Firstly, synthesis of the retrieved RNA from the throat and nose forms complementary DNA, (cDNA).
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Secondly, the specific cDNA goes through a series of amplifications. Eventually creating a quantity of viral load that can be reliably detected.
It is the viral load that RT-PCR measures. Therefore, it has previously been successfully with other conditions. For example, in HIV patients and other RNA viruses such as mumps and measles.
are your covid-19 pcr tests approved?
Yes. UKAS is the regulatory body for laboratories in the UK.
The laboratory that we use is also UKAS accredited.
The PCR Covid-19 test is the gold-standard in Covid testing.
Regardless of where you are flying to, you can rest assured that our fit-to-fly certificates are recognised world-wide.
what happens if i test positive for covid-19
We will inform you in the unfortunate event that you test positive for COVID-19. The laboratory will also inform Public Health England's track and trace.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to travel, and you will have to self isolate.
Your insurance company might cover the cost of cancelling your trip.
A Which survey found that 50% of travel insurance covers the costs of a cancelled trip when a customer tests positive for Covid-19.
