FAQS
What is an MSK Scan?
An MSK ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the musculoskeletal system. It allows clinicians to see inside soft tissues and joints without the need for radiation, making it a safe diagnostic method.
What Can an MSK Scan Diagnose?
MSK ultrasound is commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as:
- Tendonitis: Inflammation of tendons, often affecting areas like the shoulder, elbow, and knee.
- Ligament injuries: Including sprains or tears in ligaments, particularly in the ankle and wrist.
- Muscle tears or strains: Identifying damage to muscles caused by sports injuries or overuse.
- Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae, fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints.
• Arthritis: Helping to assess inflammation in joints and monitor the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.
• Ganglion cysts: Detecting fluid-filled lumps that form around joints and tendons.
• Nerve entrapments: Visualising nerves to diagnose conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.
What are the Benefits of MSK Ultrasound
• Real-time Imaging: Ultrasound provides dynamic imaging, which is one of the key advantages. The sonographer can move the limb or joint during the scan, offering a better view of the structures and helping to assess how they function.
• Non-invasive: The scan operates on the skin’s surface without the need for needles or incisions.
• No radiation: Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it a safer option, especially for repeated assessments.
• Detailed soft tissue evaluation: It is particularly effective in diagnosing soft tissue injuries that may not be visible on X-rays.
What are Ultrasound scans?
Ultrasounds are a safe and non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. They’re commonly used to examine organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys, as well as to monitor pregnancies, providing detailed views to help diagnose and guide treatment. A Sonographer's Role in MSK Scans
As a sonographer, I perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations to aid the referring clinician in making a diagnosis. We tailor the scan itself to the specific area of concern. I work closely with healthcare professionals, ensuring that the images and reports are detailed and accurate.

How to prepare for an MSK Scan?
Most MSK scans don’t require any special preparation. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to facilitate easy access to the area under examination. You might need to remove some clothing or jewellery, depending on the body part undergoing scanning.
What to Expect During the Scan
The MSK scan is a straightforward procedure. I will apply a small amount of gel to the skin, which helps transmit the sound waves. We move a transducer, a small handheld device, over the area, sending sound waves into the body and receiving the returning echoes, which we then turn into images.
Most scans take around 15 to 30 minutes. As the scan proceeds, you will be able to see the images on the screen. While the procedure is painless, some patients may experience slight pressure when the transducer presses against their skin.
After the scan
There are no side effects from an MSK ultrasound scan, and you can return to your normal activities immediately. The results are usually sent to your referring clinician, who will discuss the findings with you.
Limitations of MSK Ultrasound
While MSK ultrasound is highly effective, there are some limitations. It may not always provide clear images of deeper structures, such as those inside the spine or hip joints. In such cases, additional imaging, such as an MRI, may be required.
