Private Abdominal Ultrasound Scans Birmingham

Welcome to The Guildhall Practice, a leading centre for physical therapies and healthcare services. We offer diagnostic abdominal ultrasound scans in Birmingham at our CQC-regulated clinics.

An abdominal ultrasound provides a detailed image of the organs in your abdomen. This includes the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, and blood vessels like the aorta. The scan is commonly used to investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or changes in bowel habits. It can also be a follow-up to blood tests that show abnormal liver or kidney function.

The Guildhall Practice is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Our qualified and experienced sonographers are all registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS).

FAQS

What is an Abdominal Ultrasound Scan?

An abdominal ultrasound scan is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure used to examine the organs and structures within the abdomen. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of vital abdominal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, and major blood vessels such as the abdominal aorta.

Abdominal ultrasound scans are commonly performed to investigate symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, bloating, abnormal liver function tests, or suspected kidney problems. This scan helps detect conditions such as gallstones, liver disease, kidney stones, cysts, tumours, and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

As a radiation-free imaging technique, abdominal ultrasound is often the first-line investigation recommended by healthcare professionals for abdominal symptoms.

Who might need an abdominal ultrasound?

You may need an abdominal ultrasound scan if you are experiencing ongoing symptoms or if your healthcare provider needs to investigate potential issues with your abdominal organs. Common reasons for referral include:

  • Persistent or unexplained abdominal pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Abnormal liver function or signs of liver disease
  • Suspected kidney stones or kidney abnormalities
  • Gallstones or gallbladder inflammation
  • Detection of abdominal aortic aneurysms or other vascular issues

Abdominal ultrasound imaging allows clinicians to assess internal organs and blood vessels in real time, helping to diagnose a wide range of conditions. It provides a clear, detailed picture without the need for invasive diagnostic procedures or exposure to ionising radiation.

Abdominal Ultrasound Scan Process

During the scan, I will apply a small amount of gel to your abdomen. This gel helps transmit the sound waves. Using a handheld probe, I move it across your skin, sending high-frequency sound waves into your body. These waves bounce off your organs, creating real-time images on a monitor. The process is completely painless and usually takes around 20-30 minutes.

You will likely be asked to fast for several hours before your abdominal ultrasound. This is because food in your stomach and intestines can interfere with the clarity of the images. During the procedure, you will lie down comfortably while I guide the ultrasound probe over your abdomen. You may be asked to change positions slightly to get clearer views of different organs

Why choose a ultrasound for my abdominal scan?

One of the biggest advantages of an ultrasound is that it does not use radiation, unlike Xrays or CT scans. This makes it a safer option, especially for pregnant women and children. Its also quick, painless, and does not require any recovery time. After the scan, you can go about your day as usual. The images are usually reviewed by your referring clinician, who will discuss the results with you.

What can an Abdominal Ultrasound Scan detect?

An abdominal ultrasound scan can detect a wide range of conditions affecting the organs and blood vessels within the abdomen. It provides detailed images in real time, helping to identify:

  • Liver conditions such as fatty liver, cirrhosis, or liver tumours
  • Gallbladder issues including gallstones or inflammation (cholecystitis)
  • Kidney problems such as kidney stones, cysts, or blockages
  • Pancreatic abnormalities including inflammation (pancreatitis) or masses
  • Spleen enlargement or injury
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms (a swelling or bulge in the main abdominal artery)
  • Fluid in the abdomen (ascites)
  • Abnormal masses or cysts in any abdominal organ

This non-invasive scan is often used to support the early diagnosis of abdominal conditions, allowing for timely treatment and management without the risks associated with more invasive procedures.

Is there any aftercare following the Abdominal Ultrasound Scan?

There are no side effects from an abdominal ultrasound, and you can resume normal activities straight away. The results will typically be sent to your referring doctor, who will interpret them and explain the findings. If further testing or treatment is required, your doctor will advise you onthe next steps
